Someone is Watching You Now In This Lobby
Scavenger game, 2014
Collaboration with Ojus Doshi
Graduate students who work in the RISD CIT building rarely use the lobby as more than a transit path to the elevators. Considering that the lobby includes a long hallway with a corner people barely notice, Ojus and I designed a site-specific mobile game to transform the lobby into a place for fun discoveries.
The game is based on a fictional story in which someone is watching those who enter the lobby. With a poster as an invitation to the lobby, we created a prototype of a mobile app leading the participant to uncover clues and to trace the path of the watcher. To access, participants must check or touch existing signs and objects in the lobby, including room numbers and mailboxes. In the end, the app shows the actual path that the participant traveled, which is a hidden word revealing the identity of the watcher.
In this way, this app challenges the participant’s experience within a conventional space in a playful manner, touching architectural elements and drawing letters by walking. Ideally, we plan to create an online platform that participants can upload to share their paths, bringing a sense of community to the building.
