The brief was to demonstrate Android platform’s ability to push the limits of interaction between mobile and physical for the 7,000 attendees of the Google I/O developer conference.
Paint Party was a 4,500-pound physical installation that harnessed the power of Android to control a giant, custom-built, paint-flinging robot so that all I/O attendees could create art together on a massive cube. Through the Java-developed custom app, users could control the robot’s movement. Their inputs from touch, gyroscope and accelerometer translated 1:1 to the robot’s arm, which flicked paint on the massive canvas, a 4′ by 4′ double-axis rotating cube.
I was the lead art director on this project, overseeing the creative process from concept to final execution. I defined the look and feel, the color, shape and sound palette for the experience, ensuring a seamless integration and experience for the users. I've also art directed the control app which allowed people to interact with the Kuka robot and the cube.
