It’s no secret that I have an affinity for using texture in my work. These usually come from surfaces and objects I photograph, documents I scan, or unintentional marks I make while I’m making other work. Lately, I’ve been working on making some of those intentional marks, well, more intentional. This started a few years ago while working on a book I was designing for The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s MFA in Writing Program. I’ve designed this book for the SAIC past 6 years and it has always been a fun project that encouraged experimentation. Last year, I created an image entirely made from wet coffee grounds that evoked the book’s theme, “Tectonics.” This year I created a unique texture made entirely of sugar.
