I designed an app that solves two problems by creating both an opportunity to start a cooking business from your own home and a marketplace where you get home-made food from real people. The first problem is homesickness. As an international student, I understand how hard is it to cook every day and how that affect the quality of that food cooked. Also, it is easy to get tired of eating the same food over and over again in the restaurants nearby. We miss the “home” in a homemade meal and the grandmother making that special dish for us. The solution to this problem was to connect people in their own neighborhood with other neighbors that cook for a hobby or as an occupation. The second problem was giving people a way to promote their cooking skills and to create a business from it. According to the article “Microenterprise Development as Job Creation,” (http://fieldus.org/Publications/jobcreation.pdf) micro-entrepreneurs are an important source of jobs in a country and demonstrate the power that these very small businesses have to produce jobs for their owners and others. Paila is this solution that gives the users the chance work from home and to feel like home. The name Paila refers to “to a large shallow metal pan or earthenware bowl which oftentimes is also used as a serving plate for the foods prepared in it.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paila ) It is a Spanish word to refer to a big of food being cooked to be shared in a community.
