A living lab for sustainable design and building practices (at a gas station)
How does an energy giant demonstrate their investment in alternative energies? They decided we should take over an old, dirty, horrible service gas station in LA and create a real world platform for environmental messaging and design to inspire a captive audience. Not to mention, the first LEED-certified gas station.
My team led the strategy, design, architecture partnership with Office dA and JohnstonMarkLee, and messaging for the year long project—a pre-feb BP station usually takes more than a year to develop. From the overall design to the names of the fuel grades (Good, Better, Best) were reimagined to elevate the environmental message and reduce the presence of the BP brand. In the end, we had visitors spending 10–15 minutes longer as they explored the site and the initiatives throughout the site. The project was awarded the Grand Clio in Design from the Clio Awards.
