Ogilvy won Nascar based on a pitch film I wrote and directed. Our task from the beginning: bring in new fans and keep the hard core ones surprised. We grew general viewership (up 15%) Hispanic viewership (42%) and Nascar Fantasy (up 23%). We beat out Nike for Best Spot at the Promax Sports Marketing Awards and recently won 2 Clios. Gold and Bronze. My best moment: getting an email from Tom Wolfe. (The back story: I read Tom's Esquire article from 1964, "The Last Great American Hero," and it gives me an idea for our Daytona anthem spot. My account guy, Ben Ende, is friends with Tom Wolfe's son. Ben asks me if we should send Tom the finished anthem spot—the one he inspired? With some trepidation—after all, this is TOM FUCKING WOLFE!—I say "Uh...Uh...Ok." Then I see his email below. Who needs gratification from fat, sweaty award show judges when you have Tom Wolf's approval?
