Outliers, Vol. I: Iceland
In 2010, I spearheaded a crowdfunding effort to produce an independent film project, which brought together seven remote artists to create a unique series of improvised collaborations. We successfully raised over $48k to fully support and deliver the project within a year. The result: a photography book, documentary film, and stunning musical soundtrack featuring contributions by artists as diverse as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Goldmund/Keith Kennif, Deru, Shigeto, and Eskmo.
The film itself highlights the work of each artist involved through interviews, and the creative team drew from the people, landscape, and culture around them to inspire a series of musical vignettes constructed from the sound recordings, textures, and moving image captured during the process. All seven artists contributed towards the projects' photos, video, film, and sound recording.
Aside from directing the documentary itself, I led a team from inception to launch by creative directing the crowdsourcing campaign, producing the film at all stages, facilitating all marketing collateral, distributing the film, and ultimately launching with a series of live events including a sold out premiere at Lincoln Hall in Chicago during the summer of 2012.
