Tokyo’s prodigious subway systems transport some 8.7 million people every day, amassing the busiest metro in the world. Terms often referred to when referencing the Tokyo subway are ‘Tsukin Jigoku’, which translates literally to ‘Commuter Hell’. Amidst all the chaos, some Japanese commuters still seemingly find the time and sanctity to doze off for a few minutes in between stops.
I decided to document these moments to convey the peace and tranquility they were very much seeking during their hellish and often long commutes. The result is Subway Sleepers.
