Digital annual report with interactive charts for the world’s largest developer platform
We helped GitHub design its annual report, State of the Octoverse, which presents insights on software development industry trends. We transformed the data from four million sources into maps, diagrams, and charts to make the information more engaging. In addition, we designed a fully responsive website that served as a hub for users to read, explore, and interact with the report’s data insights.
GitHub’s data scientists collected and analyzed information from over 40,000 survey responses and 4 million repositories through Excel files, PowerPoint presentations, and other data sets. With this information, along with GitHub’s initial ideas and a 60-page context document, we strategically designed each chart, map, and diagram.
Our goal was to find the balance between presenting accurate insights and maintaining clarity and simplicity to reach both technical and non-technical users. The website is responsive and accessible from any device.
The impact of the report extended beyond the website, sparking hundreds of discussions on X and nearly 1000 articles across digital magazines and specialized blogs. Major publications including Developer Tech News, KDnuggets, InfoQ, The New Stack, and The Register featured the report, extending its reach and inspiring meaningful conversations within the software development community.
