When I joined the design team of an early-stage startup, there were no website styles, libraries, processes or templates in place, making updates tedious and maintenance difficult. As a result, the site was rarely updated, optimized, or merchandised. Before considering a visual design refresh, I built a foundational design system in Figma to support more independent control when deployed in a modular page builder. The new system and processes established a better base with room to scale, allowing the team to operate more nimbly and independently to keep pace with rapid growth.
Building a foundational design system improved internal workflows and efficiency while reducing developer workload and time to market.
