From October 2022 through September 2023, I worked as a contract communications specialist for NASA’s Applied Sciences Program. I have been a science journalist for more than a decade, but in the last year and a half, I have been trying to transition into institutional communications, so I wanted to include an example of my writing in this realm. Program managers wanted our team to broadly explain how NASA works with the insurance industry and highlight several projects the agency had funded. Two writers before me had tried to tackle this tricky assignment, but they struggled with how to approach the story. My supervisor brought me onto the team with the hope that I could apply my feature-writing skills to these big-picture assignments that required a lot of synthesis. For this story, I interviewed several data users and researchers in different program areas, and I coordinated edits to incorporate the feedback of these subject matter experts. The article was shared on the NASA Earth Twitter (now X) account, which has 3.7 million followers. To date, that post has 67,500 views, 324 likes, and 51 reshares.
