Publish What You Pay (PWYP) is a global coalition of organisations campaigning for greater transparency in the oil, gas and mining sectors. Their members are often grassroots organisations whose activists work in countries where civic space and fundamental freedoms are greatly restricted. In 2020, in the face of increasing pressure on civic space worldwide, the coalition decided to place greater strategic focus on the protection of civic space, and on providing tools and training to members about the issue.
This factsheet is designed to inform and educate members on the concept of civic space, the exercise of fundamental freedoms that underpins it, how these apply to their work, and what assistance/protections could be available to them.
The main challenge was to take complex and abstract information and structure this in a way that would make it accessible and meaningful to the target audiences: presenting it in a logical way that would made it easy to read and digest. To support this we needed a visual design that was simple and engaging, and did not distract from the importance of the content.
We worked with the PWYP team to develop a structure and sequence whereby the information was conveyed in short sections, with each new section building logically on the previous one, using headings/design to encourage users to read the text section. This was built around several key questions the target audience were likely to ask about the topic, derived from conversations with PWYP’s regional coordinators who work directly with members on these issues. We also worked on drafting the copy with the project leader (a human rights lawyer) to try and keep the copy as simple and direct as possible.
