Conversations

Conversations brings together a broad range of dialogues between author Jan Tumlir and artist Jorge Pardo, beginning in 1999. They encompass contemporary art, design, publishing, and music, and connect the varied contexts of Los Angeles and Mérida, Mexico, where they took place. Working with Adam Michaels, we designed Conversations with thoughtful references to Pardo’s artwork, Tumlir’s writing, and the nature of their conversations. The book is reader-friendly in size, format, and layout, with four-page color image spreads punctuating Pardo and Tumlir’s in-depth discussions and copious footnotes allowing for a greater accessibility to a wider audience. Using recycled uncoated paper for the texts, the color images of Pardo’s work pop on satin coated paper. The bright color palette of the cover was inspired directly from Pardo’s palette in his own work, especially his installation at Dia Beacon. With the body text in Calibre designed by Klim Type Foundry, the display type of chapter titles and sections call back to a vernacular Los Angeles poster aesthetic. The result is an intimate reading experience of a unique intellectual friendship spanning decades.
