Rapid UX Process - iPad Deicing Timer

During the winter months, pilots need to keep track of how long they have to take off after the deicing procedure (the process of treating wings to prevent ice buildup).

The goal of this project was to design a deicing timer with 2 parts; the full screen set up with timer, plus the banner version. This project was part of a larger EFB (electronic flight bag) app pilots used preflight. I was assigned to create a solution in two and a half weeks.

Pilots have an unbelievable amount of information they have to absorb preflight. Flight plans range from 10-40 pages long, and the average briefing time is anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes. This briefing window also includes multiple interruptions. Winter months require an extra step for deicing.

Pilots needed a timer with a more efficient experience. The timer also had to be viewable during flight planning, while allowing the pilot to perform other tasks.

Challenges
Time: 2.5 weeks is not a lot of time for us to do our preferred full UX process, so we applied guerilla tactics.

Space: The current EFB tablet solution was getting crowded, and flight plan information is dense enough. We had to come up with a solution that was obvious enough for pilots to see, but did not distract from the rest of their duties.

Hypothesized Solution
Research current solutions to discover which parts were needed vs not. Eliminate the unneeded parts and make this as simple as possible, while still covering the user's needs.

I was really proud of how much we accomplished this solution in a short amount of time, while involving user and the process. The business was happy with the results, especially since we hit our deadline.
