SMS is an outdated, stupid, and insecure technology, but the alternative is what has become the standard in most countries where some giant company (WhatsApp usually, or Apple’s iMessage, or Line in Japan) becomes the monopoly chat/calling app for everyone. Is there a middle ground, a way to text/call that is as universal as email but less dumb and insecure than SMS?
