Off-White Store, Singapore
While working at Family New York (now Food New York) I was project architect for Off-White's first store in Singapore.
The Off-White Singapore store is located within a large, slick, shopping mall that is surrounded by other large, slick, shopping malls, on the infamous Orchard Road. Rather than replicate the area’s endlessly luxury aesthetic, the Off-White store offers a respite from the shiny surfaces and LED screens. It is designed as a thick wall to block out the surrounding city. Within the thickness of the wall sits the store’s retail functions: product display, fitting rooms, and storage. The wall wraps around the site's boundary to create a central courtyard, free of product. Here exists the respite; a quiet gallery space, free of clutter, programmable to hold rotating exhibitions and events, but mainly to be kept empty.
