"Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a very rare genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by the abnormal development of bone in areas of the body where bone is not normally present (heterotopic ossification), such as the ligaments, tendons, and skeletal muscles. Specifically, this disorder causes the body’s skeletal muscles and soft connective tissues to undergo a metamorphosis, essentially a transformation into bone, progressively locking joints in place and making movement difficult or impossible.” (https://rarediseases.org/rare-diseases/fibrodysplasia-ossificans-progressiva/) Those afflicted with the mobility issues caused by FOP often had difficulty doing daily tasks and managing the objects they needed throughout the day. Of the many problems that the people with this condition faced, this was identified as a definite area of need. This solution was developed for a particular patient who used a wheelchair and had limited mobility in their arms, with the intent that such a solution could also help others with similar needs.
