For medical research to develop safe and effective treatments for all, it is essential for participants to reflect the diversity of our nation. However, while diverse populations represent 38.7% of the U.S. population they represent 2-16% of clinical trial participants. African Americans comprise 13 percent of the population but—until recently—five percent of clinical trial participants. The only way to impact these disparities is by increasing the participation of patients that look like America. Merck has an opportunity to combat racial disparity in clinical trials by providing insight driven tools to successfully reach and engage the Black community. I was contracted to produce a non-branded bi-fold for placement in clinics and offices. I created the piece to be authentic and culturally relevant without being stereotypically heavy handed.
