Colombian Coffee Crisis with Propina Tip
With the falling prices of coffee in the international markets, the livelihoods of many small-scale farmers in Colombia are being threatened. Colombia has about 500,000 small-scale coffee farms that employ over a million laborers to pick coffee by hand. Against the competition of larger and more mechanized farms in Brazil and Vietnam, Colombian farms are making significant losses, leading many farms to take on large debts. With Propina Tip, I visited various small-medium coffee farms in Pereira, Manizales, Gigante and Santa Rosa in Colombia.
