Take a photo, learn a language. Using Google Translate and Cloud Vision technology, Kupu uses advanced Machine Learning to understand the objects in your photos and translate them, in real-time.
It serves up the most likely te reo Māori translation based on the key object in an image. If multiple objects are detected, you can scroll through and select the correct translation.
Working with Google I explored multiple ways in UX to show the translation results. User testing also proved that keeping the app simple and single-focused, provided the best experience.
Working closely with Art Director Mike Davison we designed the logo and UI elements influenced from traditional Māori weaving.
We launched Kupu in New Zealand during Māori language week gaining over 100,000 Downloads.
In 2019 new features were added (Add to my Kupu, and Webapp for tablets.) as the product continues to develop.
