LABoz del artesano
Our client, a ceramics studio located in Oaxaca, Mexico, expressed their need to grow as a brand and to find a way to help homeless youths in this region of the country.
My team -comprised of two industrial designers, two fashion designers, one textile designer and one graphic designer (myself)- had as main focus the wish to change the public’s perspective towards artisans in Oaxaca. They are always perceived as traditional. However, my team and I identified the ceramics’ studio’s constant drive for experimentation and its owner’s
wish to inspire other artisans to experiment more in their craft, as well as to include techniques from crafts other than their own.
Therefore, we created a collective of Oaxaca-based artisans: a place to experiment and exchange some techniques; to work on personal projects with the support of other local artisans, and to work on group projects. This collective would also offer classes to homeless youths in the area.
For the naming of this collective, we played with the words “lab” and “the voice”. The collective, which my team and I always referred to as a laboratory, is meant to give Oaxacan artisans a place to express themselves.
It also partners with restaurants, stores and galleries to promote the work created within the lab. Therefore, the naming has the meaning “artisan’s lab”
(lab del artesano) and “the artisan’s voice” (la voz del artesano).
