Typeface design, 'Welcome'
A set of experimental letters based on traditional Kolam, a decorative ephemeral folk art popular in India and across South East Asia. These are drawings added in rice flour by the women of the household to the entrance of their homes as part of their morning routine.
'Welcome' is an attempt to reflect the changing face of India and illustrate the contrast between emerging modernity and traditional roots.
These letterforms can be applied on both Devanagiri script and Roman letters as a bilingual system. I'm currently working on developing the Devanagari script.
Recently I was commissioned to exhibit my typeface at White City Place in collaboration with Tiipoi–a product design company based in London. I created a physical interactive Kolam square as part of which the audience could play around with acrylic type stencils
to create their own Kolams with rice powder.
