Audible x Stan Lee @ Comic Con SD 2019
Audible’s much-anticipated release of Stan Lee’s last known work — A Trick of Light — was in perfect company at the 2019 SDCC. The intention of the installation was to preview the audio book — driving downloads and subscriptions to Audible. Staged in an abandoned Thai restaurant, the experience immersed fans in a lightning storm — much like when the book’s protagonist gains his superpowers — then lead them through a labyrinth of “cyberspace” where they discovered clues about the book. When I began the project, the working concept was simply "lights & lasers". I developed this concept in to a fully immersive light and audio show that put fans in the shoes of the book’s cyberkinetic protagonist. For the first room, I developed a method of using columns of 1-way mirror masking 150 individually-addressable LED tubes. Fans walked in to and amongst a maze of mirrored columns that, as the 5-minute show progressed, started flashing in cue with the thunder. All of a sudden fans were in the middle of a lightning storm as the narrator’s voice lead them through. The second and final space consisted of a "laser" labyrinth with eight evidence-gathering stations. Fans approached each station and audio clips began — giving them bits and pieces of the story of a group of friends attempting to save the universe from an all-encompassing virus. Just enough to leave fans wanting to hear more. The experience saw over 4000 visitors in the weekend it was up, saw upwards of 78 million social impressions -- up from 3.3 million the previous year.
