A Message From Earth
Agency: Stink Studios
Creative Lead, Writer, Filmmaker: Ian Watt
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Golden Record project, WeTransfer partnered with Stink Studios to present “A Message from Earth”, a collage of the contemporary human condition.
Together we created an interactive site of specially-commissioned music, film, art, and literature paying tribute to the ambitious, optimistic spirit of the original.
I had the opportunity to work alongside WeTransfer in two unique capacities: firstly to craft the copy for the experience, and secondly to lead the effort for the content creation process.
The language present throughout the site’s distinct chapters acts as both a guide and as a creative expression in kind with the site’s content. I was able to apply my creative writing ability from a directorial standpoint in a new way, with a project that allowed for more of an abstract approach.
Creative writing played a peculiar role throughout the life of the project. It was the first creative expression - serving as a creative internal brief for our design teams - while remaining completely abstract. I mean, really abstract. I was borderline crying while writing most of it.
The copy evolved alongside the project, moving from somewhat of a stream-of-consciousness novel into the concise phrases present on the site today.
While working with our internal team to shape our creative approach to the site, I also led the content creation process for a wide range of artists and contributors, including Sophy Hollington, Dr. Wanda Diaz Merced, Gilles Peterson, Survive, Deepak Chopra, and more.
This involved writing briefs for each artist, bringing them into the headspace to comprehend the emotional gravity of the original Golden Record, and the mission it continues to carry out. In Wanda Diaz-Merced’s case, I tried writing a proper brief, but I couldn’t.
So I wrote her a poem.
