Post-Part: Come Up to My Room
I designed and art directed a contemporary reimagining of Charlotte Perkin Gilman's 19th century short story, "The Yellow Paper." Our goal was to convey the experiences and misconceptions of contemporary women grappling with post-partum mood disorder in the context of Charlotte Perkins story in a manner that could be understood by a broad audience.
The installation was exhibited during Come Up To My Room at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, Canada. The event is an annual curated showcase of experiential installation art and design.
The focus of the room was the wallpaper - by examining the wall through a blue filter (representing depression) a visitor would expose the collage imagery hidden beneath the blue brocade, created by artist Catherine Mellinger. Secondly, as the visitor stepped closer to examine the imagery, movement sensors would trigger audio of women telling their stories of coping with PPMD.
