“Samaaj” translating to “understand” is an exploration of South Asian identity in a post 9/11 America. In a world where the terms “Muslims” and “Islam” have been villainized with media’s rhetoric and in turn created an un-nurturing place for many who fall anywhere in the spectrum of those identities. Samaaj is a website that creates necessary dialogue among the diasporic community to understand the contemporary culture in the US for South Asians.
Through various conversations held with a diverse group from the South Asian community. A visual archive was built to showcase the individuality of each narrative that was held together by the common thread. Samaaj attempts to create a safe space for members of the diaspora to discuss their experiences in a post 9/11 America while creating a place for those outside of the community to come and understand an unbiased view of our identities.
