Visionaire 67 Fetish Steven Klein
Visionaire’s 67th issue is fashion photographer Steven Klein’s portrayal of “fetish,” a collection of 10 original chromogenic prints.
Klein’s approach as guest-editor was a blunt, uncompromising interpretation of fetishization that extended to the format of the issue itself, meant to glorify traditional photographic practice through a three-piece, light-tight archival box. With the directive for unequivocal vernacular, Visionaire presented a justified system using Compacta, hot stamped for an embossed, high-shine black intended to invoke the textural qualities of bondage gear or raised flesh. I carried the same heavy-handedness in promotional collateral by warping the type to an almost punishing degree.
In addition to helping develop the design system, I participated in planning the issue launch at Sotheby’s New York; the party at the Standard Hotel’s hamam during Art Basel Miami; and Klein’s first public release in Asia in a co-curated group exhibit at The Club art space in Tokyo.
