Visionaire: Experiences in Art and Fashion
Visionaire is a New York-based fashion and art media entity with roots in experimental publishing. Their issues span a wide range of formats—from loose folios gathered in a leather envelope to “self-playing” vinyl records—while their other work includes events, videos, and exhibitions. When the current art director reached out for my assistance on their monograph, I joined as a designer, retoucher, researcher, and copy-editor.
After various studies, we chose to use Perpetua for the type system, which not only held what seemed the appropriate gravity for a quarter- century of work but also referenced that same history; one of the founders’ favorite issues in collaboration with a fashion house was set in this face. We paced the content as a reverse chronology of highlights to then begin anew in the back matter with a comprehensive timeline from beginning to end—both looking back on their past and forward to their future.
My work eventually extended to helping plan and design a series of installations relating to the book launch and anniversary, which developed into a full-time position with the studio.
