The Walt Whitman Initiative
For The Walt Whitman Initiative I was tasked to create an identity that represented the organization's zeal for all things Walt Whitman. While getting to know Walt I explored some initial concepts for the mark. Some more formal and others more organic and abstracted.
After all the exploration I landed on this final mark. A sort of pulsing circle that could be interpreted into several forms. It ebbs and flows as the lines wrap around the one before. The themes for the mark were based on Walt’s writing and really the idea of the cycle of everything. And the rings moving outward outward to suggest growth.
With the initial posters there was a lot of layering, New York imagery, and hand done textures. The clients appreciated the urban
nature of this direction. Walt saw himself as a bookmaker before anything so the only way to stay true to Walt was to hand make the focal point of the poster which was the collage. The imagery is of different parts of Walt and what he wrote about how he loved the city and Brooklyn.
