Nike HQ + The Church
Chicago was once a basketball Mecca. But recently, Chicago saw a sharp increase in gun violence, causing a significant drop in basketball participation among inner-city youth. Thisis bigger than a game -- when kids don’t feel safe to play, communities are ruptured, and hope is irreparably damaged.
Nike wanted to help restore faith in inner-city Chicago by restoring faith in basketball. That meant creating a placefor Chicago’s youth to play, re-connect with community, and dream crazy.
So Nike created Just Do It Headquarters at The Church, transforming a one-hundred year old abandoned churchin the heart of inner-city Chicago into a state-of-the-art basketball sanctuary for at-risk youth that offered beautiful design and high-end amenities including a court, lockers, weight room, and free gear.
Kids were taught basketball fundamentals, and got expert advice on nutrition, conditioning and the mental aspects of the sport. The Church enlisted Chicago sports legends from the NBA, WNBA, and NCAA, inspiring kids to realize their basketball and life dreams.
Hosting both elite athletes with college ambitions, as wellas average players competing for the love of the game,The Church powerfully reminded Chicago’s youth thatthey’re worthy and valued members of a community.
