Love Shodan xx began out of an exploration of myself on the internet, but rapidly became about the accessibility of information on the internet. Shodan is an internet search engine used for legally obtaining information on a read only experience. On Shodan you can access the controls to medical storage facilities, wind turbine farms, cctv cameras, printers, and home devices such as automated doors. With this emphasis on access to person information I began to search for as much identification on people as I could:
Within four or five hours on the web one evening, I had downloaded:
12 drivers licences
04 ID cards
30 Passports
08 Residence Permits
01 Debit Card
After much experimentation with this information, the path that was of most intrigue to me was the effect of the information in these documents alongside my own relation to them. It is illegal to steal someones likeness but what happens if you take just one feature (eyes, nose, eyebrow, etc) and paste it on an image of myself.
Alongside the cut and paste features, I embossed pvc cards and explored a narrative questioning whether of not we feel comfortable with how underprepared we were for the digital era in terms of security.
