A+D Museum #GradientMachines

Produced as part of the Impermanent Collection at the A + D Museum in Los Angeles, the Gradient Machine flip books are a series of physically printed motion graphic sequences that explore form, light, and color gradation. Originating from previous branding studies for the FX Networks, these compositions were initially meant to create key art concepts through text and the application of a dynamic, shifting color field. As these studies progressed, unintended gradient compositions and vibrant lighting effects arrose, prompting the creation of separate experiments. Through the combination of form, light, and motion, we began to codify resulting effects which use the performative nature of gradients to track light sources as they move in relation to diverse volumes. The final execution of these studies exploits the ever increasing trend of looping motion graphics, bringing it into the physical domain through handheld flipbooks and vibrant color.
