Every 28 Hours is an annual festival highlighting and celebrating local black art, culture, and activism. This year’s theme was centered on resilience and joy in the struggle against police brutality and oppression, and featured performances by local black artists, as well as visual art installations, guest speakers, and panel discussions led by community activists.
It was important for the artwork to symbolically embrace a positive and proactive outlook for the future, so I created floral illustrations to represent the growth and healing from oppression. Since the client wanted the names of victims to be highlighted and remembered, I intertwined their names with the illustrations by having them function as the “stems” that led to regrowth.
The style of the art and the logotype needed to feel natural and familiar, so I gave the artwork a “hand-done edge” and made the informational text feel a part of the illustration. I used a brush style for the logotype to emphasize movement, and created flexibility by having both a stacked and horizontal form for the many different mediums and sizes in which the logotype would be presented.
