Mitski "Be The Cowboy" record
Nominated for “Best Recording Package” for the 61st Annual Grammy Awards (2018).
"Be the Cowboy" is the fifth studio album by Japanese-American indie rock musician Mitski and her greatest work to date. Pitchfork's number 1 album for the "The 50 Best Albums of 2018" and Rolling Stone calls her a "visionary singer-songwriter". I designed the vinyl record sleeve, labels, movie-size poster and a pair of 100% silk handkerchiefs as well as the CD packaging.
The dual consciousness in the songs and stories on the record are amplified with the design. The record protective sleeve and the circular record label complete each other but are never aligned. Owners of this record will find the hidden lyrics printed inside the cardboard sleeve even if it makes them a little uncomfortable to stretch the record pocket. Because Mitski is such an accomplished lyricist, a spot gloss highlights more lyrics on the gatefold that can only be seen and read in the right light. A movie-size poster amplifies the themes on the album and the photography by Bao Ngo—it's huge, though, and a feat to unfold alone. A pair of 100% silk handkerchiefs have corresponding lyrics but are sold separately and numbered as an edition.
