This project was a special ‘Olympics’ themed issue for The New York Times Magazine aimed at placing the 2016 Olympics in both a contemporary and historic context. The articles ranged from profiles on current athletes competing in the games to writer’s most memorable moments to a photo essay by Erik Madigan Heck pairing contemporary Olympians in portraits with past Olympians who inspire them. The goal throughout was to visually hint at the rich history of the games by commissioning art imbued with historical meaning, notably tasking Lance Wyman, designer of the 1968 Mexico Summer Olympics identity to create iconography for our sidebars throughout.
