Bring Zack Back Home

Background: As part of its CSR, Safaricom wanted to help the Kenyan Paraplegic organisation raise money for a rehabilitation centre. The sad fact was there were over 75,000 paraplegics in Kenya but not one rehabilitation centre to treat them. The nearest centre one was in South Africa, about 4000 kms away. Idea: To highlight this problem, we sent a paraplegic on a journey from Kenya to South Africa. His name was Zack. Zack undertook this 4000 km journey in his wheelchair on the premise that he’d return only when we raised money that was needed to build the rehabilitation centre in Kenya. Then we asked people to donate to ‘Bring Zack Back Home’. 'Bring Zack Back' became the most trended topic in Kenya at the time. An entire nation followed his journey on Facebook. It made news in international media too (BBC, NY Times, Al Jazeera and the Guardian) and helped raise nearly $1 million for the rehabilitation centre.
